Park Slope: Row Houses Next to Prospect Park

The Park Slope Historic District was designated by the Landmarks Preservation Commission on July 17, 1973. According to LPC, the district’s growth as a residential area is closely tied to Prospect Park, which forms its eastern boundary: after the park was authorized by the State Legislature in 1860, row house construction around it resumed in the late 1860s and 1870s and reached the district’s upper blocks by the mid-1880s. Its houses include early brick rows later superseded by the brownstone fronts the neighborhood is known for.

For a seller, the useful question is whether the actual house is inside the district and how it has been altered over time. Many Park Slope houses have seen extensions, conversions or earlier renovations. Check the address on the LPC map and gather permits and documentation for past work. Landmark status can affect approvals for exterior changes; it does not mean every change is prohibited or that every nearby house has the same status.
