Red Hook: Landmark Sites in a Waterfront Neighborhood

Red Hook does not have a designated historic district, but the Landmarks Preservation Commission has designated individual landmarks in the neighborhood. One is the Red Hook Play Center, also known as the Sol Goldman Pool, at 155 Bay Street, designated on November 18, 2008. According to LPC, the play center was constructed in 1934-36 and is one of eleven large outdoor pools that opened in the summer of 1936 under Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia and Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, a project funded largely by the Works Progress Administration and designed in the Art Moderne style.

For a seller, the useful question is the property’s own condition and history rather than a district-wide designation. Confirm whether an address is an individual landmark or near one on the LPC map, and gather permits and documentation for past work. Landmark status can affect approvals for exterior changes; it does not mean every change is prohibited.
